Top Four Myths About Acne
 

If you’ve been or know someone who’s suffering from acne, you’ve probably been exposed to the many myths about the condition. What’s shocking is that most people aren’t aware that these are myths and thus, live by and spread them around unknowingly. The following are a few of the major myths about acne that should help clear any misunderstanding you may have developed over the years.

Myth #1: Acne Only Affects Teenagers During Puberty

The truth is, most people do begin to suffer from acne during their teenage years, however, there are plenty of post teenage adults who still have acne or develop acne after their teen years, some of them quite serious, too.

Statistically speaking, approximately 75% of teenagers develop and for men, about 1% still suffer from acne in their 40s. For women in their 40s, nearly 5% suffer. Only for adults past the age of 50 do they tend to be less prone to acne. A more accurate statement regarding acne is that it is more related to hereditary factors than it is age.

Myth #2: Poor Hygiene and Dirty Skin Cause Acne

Keeping your skin clean by washing your face thoroughly and periodically is a good way to present yourself to your mate, but the lack thereof, does not directly cause acne to appear. Cleaning your face and body regularly and softly, however, does help prevent infection by bacteria, which can ultimately lead to acne. 

Cleaning too much may actually do your skin harm and cause the natural parts of your body to work against you or not work properly thereby worsening your acne. 

Also, putting certain creams, moisturizers, etc. on your skin may be helpful when fighting acne instead of hurting the situation.  Trust me, I used to never put anything on my face or even touch it with my fingers as I was so afraid my acne would get worse.

Myth #3: Poor Dietary Habits — Fried Foods and Chocolate — Cause Acne

Over many years of scientific research and studies, there has never been a link between poor dietary habits and acne development. Of course, maintaining a well-balanced diet is good for your overall health and well being anyway, so if you determine that specific foods tend to aggravate your acne, it will be in your best interest to avoid them as best you can. Also, research has shown that people who ingest foods with iodine are more likely to develop acne.

Honestly certain foods like dairy do cause me to have small breakouts to this day.  Whether it’s the dairy or something else, it seems to happen no matter what.  The key is to eat clean and healthy as much as possible, fill your body with nutrients, shower in filtered water, and perhaps consider a flush of your body once a year.  Can’t hurt right?

Myth #4: Acne Develops Under Stress

Simply put, stress does not directly cause one to develop acne. However, there have been studies that show a correlation between one’s stress level and the worsening of his acne condition. And if you take stress relief medications, be aware that many have been proven to cause acne to flare up more often than not.
